Icon-krThis article is about a set of riders in the Kamen Rider Series.
This article is about the titular heroes of the series. For other uses of the term "Kamen Rider", see Kamen Rider (disambiguation).

There are people who, through magic, mutations, technology or any combination of these means, have gained the power to change into immensely strong warriors. They may ride on motorcycles, cars or not even ride at all. Whether they fight for good, for evil or simply for their own desires, these masked, armored warriors all bear the name of Kamen Rider.

Those warriors, or elements of them such as Imagin, are named here.

Varied definitions for what a Kamen Rider is have been given many times:

Kamen Rider[]

The title was first self-beseeched by Takeshi Hongo after he was kidnapped by Shocker and became a Cyborg (改造人間, Kaizō-Ningen, "Remodeled Human"). In his fight for justice, Takeshi renamed himself the Kamen Rider to differentiate himself from the many remodeled monsters of Shocker.

Kamen Rider Agito/Kamen Rider: Seigi no Keifu[]

As Shoichi Tsugami learnt by encountering a select few of his predecessors, Kamen Riders were individuals who fought to assist and safeguard the general populace.

Kamen Rider Fourze[]

According to Tomoko Nozama, Kamen Riders are masked heroes who fight in the darkness to protect humanity. [Space Superiority]

In Kamen Rider Fourze the Movie: Everyone! Let's Feel The Universe!, Gentaro explained to Haruto that Kamen Riders are masked heroes who fight evil to protect peace on Earth.

Kamen Rider Wizard[]

As Haruto explained to Kouta Kazuraba, Kamen Riders are the legendary heroes who protect the freedom of humanity, and always come when somebody calls for help. [Neverending Story]

Kamen Rider Gaim[]

Kamen Rider Drive[]

Within the narrative of Drive, a Kamen Rider is an enemy of the Roidmudes. [What is a Kamen Rider?]

Kamen Rider Ghost[]

Kamen Rider Ex-Aid[]

In Kamen Sentai Gorider, the deceased Riders proclaimed that Kamen Riders are those who'd accept death as many times as it takes to protect the world. [Maze 3: Gorider Forever]

Kamen Rider Build[]

The residents of Touto mistakenly believe that Kamen Riders are the world's irresponsible fugitives. This definition was used after Sento, as Build, prevented the Guardians from arresting Ryuga (who was mistakenly called a murderer). During the war, Gentoku declares that the Kamen Riders are the "man-made weapons of apocalypse", which Sento denies his comment because it was only for "protection of good justice".

The theme "love and peace" is heavily synonymous with "Kamen Rider", as its what the Riders fight for according to Sento[1] and Ryuga, regardless of whenever they are human or not.

While Bi-Kaiser describes Kamen Riders as "little more than trash", the six Riders in the movie say that Kamen Riders are "those who protect their friends, those who make sure nobody is abandoned, those who reach out to the future, those who protect the world, those who bring people back their smiles, and those who use their power for the sake of others".[2]

Kamen Rider Zi-O[]

As Sougo Tokiwa explains to Wizard Hayase, a Rider's power is meant to protect people. [Beauty & Beast 2012]

Kamen Rider Zero-One[]

Gai Amatsu is currently aware of the legend of the Kamen Riders, and has stated that they are humanity's strongest weapon against the fear of extinction. [I'll Save the Humagears]

Kamen Rider Saber[]

The title was used by the Sword of Logos and given to those who wielded one of the 11 Seiken. As Sophia explains to Touma Kamiyama, when the Riders' power and title of the preceding individual has passed on to someone, the new individual will be chosen as a successor. This explanation was a reference to how the previous Saber sacrifices his powers to a young Touma. [Chapter 2: The Water Swordsman, Along With a Blue Lion.]

Kamen Rider Revice[]

The title "Kamen Rider" was thrown around by George Karizaki, who himself was a fan of the previous Riders and sought to create his own gear. As such, all the transformation gear created by both him and his father Masumi Karizaki are considered "Kamen Riders".

Kamen Rider Geats[]

The title "Kamen Rider" was used by the Desire Grand Prix as a player participating in their tournament for a chance to get their wish granted.

After Ace Ukiyo reformatted the Desire Grand Prix into his own, the Riders were now considered protectors of the world.

Kamen Rider Gotchard[]

According to the picture book The Great Path of Alchemy, which has been read to young aspiring alchemists, the title of "Kamen Rider" was first used by the "Alchemist of Daybreak" (暁の錬金術師, Akatsuki no Renkinjutsu-shi) who fought against people who utilized forbidden methods of alchemy and broke Chemy law by becoming Malgams. The title was later bestowed upon those who stayed by the rules and possessed hearts as honorable as the legendary alchemist.

By modern day, the term has been loosely altered where the title now referred to a warrior who fought in complete harmony with two companion Chemies. In this case, Gotchard with Hopper1 and Steamliner, Madade with The Sun and Unicon, and Valvarad with Madwheel and Daiohni. Generally speaking this doesn't change much due to the fact that those chosen to be Riders still possess honorable hearts and the heroic spirit needed to fight the Malgams and other evil forces. However by this definition, Kamen Rider Dread is not a "Rider" in the sense that he only uses one (though replicated) card per transformation, though his Type One forms do utilize two cards.

This trend was ultimately broken by the series' main protagonist Houtaro Ichinose, who used a forbidden method to merge himself with Steamliner, becoming a warrior known as Iron Gotchard. While this would generally be considered a violation of Chemy Law as the means of Houtaro's transformation would have turned him into a Liner Malgum (ライナーマルガム, Rainā Marugamu), his innate heroic heart and lack of malice allowed him retain his "Kamen Rider" title.[3]
